Testing the Nitrite level in your aquarium is essential for new aquarium set-ups, after medicating, when increasing fish population or in case of fish loss. Additionally, it will indicate if the biological filter is working efficiently or if nitrites are reaching levels that might be dangerous to your fish. Of course, pH levels should be tested as well but this test will indicate NH3/NH4 balance (ie. toxic and non-toxic ammonia components).
