The Aqua Clear Power Filters have an advanced filtering system built-in, called CycleGuard protection, this special filtering is achieved by combining multiple media cartridge inserts. In fact, the AquaClear Power Fitlers have the largest media volume available of any comparable sized filter on the market (Up to 6 times larger). You can choose from BioMax, Foam, Carbon and Ammonia Remover cartridges and they can be combined in multiple ways to achieve your own custom filtration.
All of the available cartridges (BioMax, Foam, Carbon and Ammonia Remover) are made to the exact size of the Aqua Clear 70 Power Filter so you can be assured that all of your aquarium water will pass through and not around the cartridge. Note: We recommend that you alternate replacement of cartridges to preserve the good bacteria populations after any cleaning.

Aqua Clear Power Filter BioMax Cartridge is beneficial for both fresh and marine aquariums and is specifically designed for the AquaClear 70 Power Filter. BioMax's unique ceramic rings are porous and correctly sized to promote extraordinary beneficial bacterial growth. This is the ideal media for biological removal of both ammonia and nitrite concentrations in your aquarium.
Fluval Biomax can be used as the middle media where it becomes an excellent strainer for medium and large particulates. However, we recommend placing it at the end of the filtration process where it becomes a strong biological filter. BioMax cartridges should be replaced every few months but try adding a new cartridge with the one to be replaced so that the older media can seed the new media.
Aqua Clear Power Filter 2 Pack Foam Cartridges have been specifically developed as a standard biological filter medium for the Aqua Clear 70 Power Filter Filter and maximizes surface contact between the water and the media. The large filtering surfaces ensure efficient cleaning of the aquarium water and maximize the colonization of beneficial bacteria providing superior biological filtration. We recommend that you replace the cartridge when you have noticed that the water circulation has slowed.
Aqua Clear Power Filter 2 Pack Carbon Cartridges have been specifically developed as a standard chemical filter medium for the Aqua Clear 70 Power Filter and like the Foam Pads maximizes surface contact between the water and the media. These pads also have large filtering surfaces which ensure efficient cleaning of the aquarium water and provide phenomenal chemical filtration. We recommend that you replace the cartridge about once a month or when you have noticed that the water circulation has slowed.
Aqua Clear Power Filter 2 Pack Ammonia Remover cartridges have been specifically developed as a freshwater filter medium for the Aqua Clear 70 Power Filter and is designed to relieve stress on your fish by keeping toxic ammonia levels in check. You should rinse this media before using it and recharge it at least once a week by soaking it in a saltwater mix for about 24 hours. Of course, you will need to thoroughly rinse the media before reusing it.
